Bunbury CC v Deaf Access XI at the Fitness Exchange Ground, Copers Cope Road, Beckenham on Sunday 9 May 2004. 35 overs per side match.
On an overcast day and after much hard work by the groundstaff, match began
with the Deaf Access batting first. The skipper, David English took the first
wicket of the new season when he had opener Simon Schollar caught by Aaron O'Brien
for 13. The home side looked in trouble at 47 for 3 but Gary Butcher, ably supported
by Graham Rogers (33) and James Hubbard (28) saw his side to 231 for 6 at the
end of their 35 overs. Gary Butcher looked in fine form as he made an excellent
100 before retiring; he hit 10 fours and 6 sixes in an innings lasting just
66 minutes. David Smith in a rare opportunity to bowl took 1 for 10.
In reply the Bunbury's found runs hard to come by against some accurate bowling.
After Paul Prichard made a bright 30 (1 four and 3 sixes), wickets fell steadily
until David English (23) and John Rice (24) added 50 for the 6th wicket. The
entertainment of the innings was provided in a partnership between Lloyd Honeyghan
and Joe Cuby which produced only 9 runs but much discussion before runs were
actually taken - run outs were possible at almost every run. But Lloyd went
on to score 18, his highest score for some time hitting two fine fours before
David Page bowled him for 18. David Smith made 20 not out as the Bunbury XI
reached 150 for 11 at the end of their overs. The Deaf Access XI led by Ian
Kendrick won the match by 81 runs.
A good effort by both teams which was appreciated by the spectators and a successful
fund raising day was completed when David English presented a cup to Ian Kendrick.
