The Bunbury XI v Sir Trevor McDonald’s XI at Imber Court, Esher on Sunday 30th May 2004. (35 overs per side)

David English won the toss and the Bunburys batted first on a bright day but with a forecast of scattered showers. After the opening over was bowled by Katie Derham and the loss of Wayne Larkins and David Smith who was given out LBW by the Bunbury’s own umpire John Hurst, Phillip de Freitas and Paul Prichard shared a stand of 84 before de Freitas was bowled by Michael Barnes for a rapid 45. Paul Prichard dominated the remainder of the innings, completing his 50 in 54 minutes and his 100 in 79 minutes before he was finally out, bowled by Sir Trevor McDonald for an excellent 136 which contained 4 sixes and 22 fours as the Bunburys totalled 231 for 7 on their allotted overs. Adam Hollioake was the most successful bowler with 2-14 in 5 overs, while Sir Trevor McDonald added the wicket of Rudolph Walker to his earlier wicket to claim 2-22 in 2 overs.

When Sir Trevor McDonald’s XI began their innings, they lost two early wickets – both taken by skipper David English for 21 runs. But this brought together John Rice and Mike Gatting in what was some of the finest stroke play seen in a Bunbury match. John Rice carried his bat for 78 not out and with Mike Gatting added 161 in just 60 minutes. Mike was caught by Phillip de Freitas just inside the boundary for 106, hitting 12 fours and 4 sixes. With Michael Barnes hitting a rapid 31 not out, Sir Trevor McDonald’s XI won by 7 wickets in the 29th over.

A wonderful day’s cricket, interrupted by three short showers but which ended in glorious sunshine and a successful fund raising day for the National Missing Person Helpline.
